Flying Apron Cookery School Classes
We offer a variety of public and private classes in our beautiful cooking school kitchen for both the casual home cook and the experienced foodie. Classes are taught by our Chef, Chris Velden. Chef Chris has been cooking and teaching for nearly 50 years across Canada, the United States, Europe, and in his home country of Germany. As a Certified European Master Chef and Culinary Instructor, his expert qualifications match his passion for teaching. Chris loves to provide culinary education to the food-inspired public at our Flying Apron Cookery School.
Most our classes include a 4-course meal, and recipes are always provided. Our teaching kitchen is licensed so you may purchase local beer, wine, or cider to enjoy during class. Contact us to book your spot in one of our scheduled classes (published below and on our Facebook page) or to arrange a private class.
Our hands-on classes offer you the opportunity to practice new skills as you cook alongside the chef, working through your class menu. Chef Chris leads the class, and you work in pairs to prepare the feast. When you’re finished cooking, you get to enjoy the delicious results of your efforts with your classmates. Recipes for the dishes made in the class are included and ready for you to take home and recreate.
Sit back, relax, and let Chef Chris create your dinner for you! In our demo classes, you get to observe and learn from the Chef as he cooks his way through the class’s menu. You will enjoy a full meal with your classmates during the demonstration class and take home recipes for the dishes made in class.
Occasionally, we partner with local food producers, special guests and subject experts to offer specialty classes. Some of our specialty classes have included chocolate making, beer & wine menu pairing, bread making, musical guest “chefs,” and mead making. These classes may include a hands-on component and always have something delicious to eat, although a full meal might not be included.
The Flying Apron offers private group cooking classes in our gorgeous Cookery School. Assemble a group of 6-10 people, select a class from our extensive seasonal list and we will provide all the ingredients for a fun culinary experience! You simply show up and enjoy the class!
Choose a Demo class where Chef Chris Velden prepares the menu or a Hands-on class where you work together to prepare the feast. Both class options include a full meal (4 courses) and copies of the recipes to take home. Our cooking classes are led by Chef Chris Velden, a European trained Master Chef with a passion for culinary education. Our classroom is licensed so you may order something from our well-curated local beverage list to enjoy during class. A minimum of six participants is required (or the cost equivalent of six participants) and the maximum is ten people.
Demonstration Class $85+HST/pp and Hands On Class $99+HST/pp
Private classes are offered during the day or evening. Accommodations are available to add to your class and accommodations are required to be booked in conjunction with a Group Class during our premium times, Friday and Saturdays.
Culinary Group Getaway include your Private Group Class and overnight accommodations in our charming inn. Accommodations include a hot, fresh breakfast in our restaurant the next morning. Book a Group Getaway and have private use of our 4-star inn. Featuring five guest rooms and each room has its own ensuite bathroom. A common room for your group to gather and small patio available. Available room arrangements include two rooms with a queen bed each and three rooms with a king bed each. Seasonal Inn Rates apply.
Our private cooking classes are perfect for celebrations, bachelorette parties, a weekend getaway with friends or a unique corporate event.

This exclusive Culinary experience for two is a delicious way to celebrate all things Nova Scotian. Guests choose their class menu from our seasonal offerings for this hands-on class and work with Chef Chris to create an amazing 4-course meal from the freshest local ingredients. In addition to copies of the recipes to take home, each participant gets their very own Flying Apron apron. After the class, retire to your lovely Inn room for the night and start the next morning with a fresh, hot breakfast in our Restaurant.
